NHS Scholarship Winners 2009: College Choice Report
The NHS Scholarship Program presents awards annually to 150 outstanding seniors from chapters in all 50 states, D.C., and overseas. At least two winners are chosen from each state – more from states with the largest number of chapters. We present to you the following information regarding the 2009 winners.
In-state v. Out-of state.
- 51.3% of the students chose to attend a school out of state
- 47.3% chose an in-state institution
- 1.3% did not identify their choice.
Public v. Non-public Post-secondary Institution Choice
Based on a separate survey of scholarship winners for 2009 where 70% of the recipients responded, our scholarship winners looked to non-public 4-year schools with slightly greater frequency than our public institutions:
- Public, 4-year school: 44.2%
- Non-public, 4-year school: 54.8%

Harvard: 6
University of Virginia: 5
Yale: 5
Brown: 4
The following schools admitted 3 of our 2009 winners (listed in alphabetical order):

Notre Dame
Princeton
Rice
University of Pennsylvania
University of Wisconsin-Madison
These 13 schools received a total of 29.3% of the 150 national winners for 2009.
