National Student Leadership Week Next Month
National Student Leadership Week (NSLW) is a time devoted to celebrating the important work of your student leaders. NSLW will take place April 16–22. This year’s theme is “Making a World of Difference,” amplifying a two-year student leadership initiative focusing on global citizenship. To make that theme come to life, we’re inviting chapters and members to participate in our “Tasty-style” Video Challenge. Chapters are asked to create a video in the style of one of those mouthwatering “Tasty” videos showing how members are making global change and post it on social media. Be sure to use #NSLW17 and #MakingGlobalChange, and tag @nhs_njhs on Twitter or Instagram. Also, visit www.nhs.us/nslw and www.njhs.us/nslw for ideas and resources.

Next College Planning Webinar Focuses on “Fit”
The next college admission planning webinar for student members and parents, “Choosing the College That’s Best for You,” airs on Wednesday, March 22, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. (ET). Advisers can spread the word to members by accessing sample communications in the “Publicizing Programs and Services” section of the Adviser Resource Center on the NHS and NJHS websites. The discussion will be valuable for any viewer who will engage in the college search process, but may be especially helpful for seniors evaluating multiple offers from colleges right now.

Time to Renew
Your chapter affiliation will expire on June 30. Renew now to ensure a smooth transition to the next academic year. You and your principal will each receive a letter and invoice by mail. Look for yours next month. You can also renew online right away on the NHS and NJHS websites.

Student Volunteers Honored by National Program
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards named the top youth volunteers of 2017 in every state and the District of Columbia—and there are more than 170 NHS and NJHS members among them. In May, two top honorees from each state will join other top youth volunteers from across the U.S. and several other countries for four days of special recognition events in Washington, D.C. During that time, 10 honorees will be named America’s top youth volunteers of 2017. See each honoree’s name and story of service here.

Members Showed Us How to #HonorYourFutureNow Throughout this school year, NHS and NJHS have been asking students to show us how they are honoring their futures. With the help of two outstanding young achievers, K. Lee Graham and Ben J. Pierce, we kicked off an #HonorYourFutureNow contest and entries started rolling in. The task was simple: Show us how you’re honoring your future by posting on Instagram using #HonorYourFutureNow and you could win a shout out from the former Miss Teen USA or YouTube sensation. We received 39 entries from students across the country showing us college acceptance letters, homework being completed, clubs that were created, service projects undertaken, and more. Congratulations to our two winners, Isabella Cantu from River Springs Charter School and Alejandra Wagnon from William J. Brennan High School. Stay tuned to our social media channels for future contests and information.

Continue #MakingGlobalChange
Don’t forget about our #MakingGlobalChange contest, too! It’s all part of the ongoing NASSP student leadership initiative on global citizenship. Show us how you’re making a difference in your school and community and post on Instagram using #MakingGlobalChange. You could win a $100 donation to a charity of your choice in your chapter’s name. We’ve already had a number of winners and donations to multiple charities. February’s winner, Greenwood Christian School, showed us how they are volunteering their time to a Stop Hunger Now campaign. We love seeing all the great work you’re doing, so keep it up. This contest runs through December 2017 with a new winner chosen every month. See what’s happening and get involved.

This is Middle Level Education Month
This is the month to focus on students ages 10 to 15 and celebrate the importance of middle level education and educators. The celebration is not limited to middle schools. In fact, high schools are encouraged to participate. NHS chapters, consider inviting a feeder NJHS chapter to visit one of your meetings, for example. Get more ideas about how your school can join in this month and throughout the year here.
