Digital badges—online credentials that reflect achievement and skills—are as authentic and legitimate as high school diplomas, certificates, and in some cases, licenses. NHS and NJHS students receive automatic digital member badges once they are registered with a student account at the national office and are verified by their adviser. Digital badges are hosted by Credly, one of the world’s largest digital credential hosting organizations. Credly hosts digital badges for universities, professional associations, and corporations including IBM, Google, and CVS. While a resume and transcript can note certain skills and accomplishments at a specific point in time, the NHS and NJHS digital badge will verify a member’s status for life. Digital badges can be shared and added to a student’s LinkedIn profile and posted on other social media platforms. Because it is hosted in the cloud, the digital credential is verified in real time and contains unique metadata to show that the individual is its authentic earner.
