Automatic Disqualification
Each year, the national office staff addresses questions from chapters, parents, and students about the use of automatic disqualification in the NHS or NJHS selection process. Per Article IX of the NHS Constitution, all membership decisions are made by a majority vote of the faculty council following a review of candidates’ qualifications in the areas of service, leadership, character, and citizenship.
For this reason, any local process is in violation of NHS or NJHS policies if it automatically excludes students who have disciplinary records, or that disqualifies or removes candidates from consideration before they are evaluated and voted on by the faculty council.
Additional information on this topic can be found in the NHS and NJHS handbooks on pages 38, 42, and 48.
